A state wide trail system for ATV's would be nice as well this was in the Argus Leader this morning. Make it happen be in Pierre Wed. for the hearing on SB 175, take a car load of folks. Kill the bill, support a trail system bill in 2011Ed
It might be tiresome for city street departments across the state, but this winter's blanket of snow is nothing short of heaven for snowmobile enthusiasts.
Especially East River.
"It's very rare for eastern South Dakota to maintain such great trail conditions for so long," said Ryan Raynor, state Game, Fish and Parks Department trail program specialist. "From Redfield to Sisseton and down to Beresford, snowmobile enthusiasts have had plenty of opportunities to enjoy South Dakota's prairie."
And when there's snow, there are snowmobile sales. This season has been spectacular at Power Brokers in Sioux Falls, said owner Jim LeTendre.
"We're scary-close to a 300-unit sales season," said LeTendre, who added that the bulk of his business is motorcycle consignment. "That's a big deal. We've had a lot of people who had a pent-up want and decided to get back into it. It's been crazy-good."
LeTendre's best year until this season - he's owned Power Brokers for eight years - was 236 snowmobiles.
"For every guy who has been dormant and wanted to get back into it, there's another guy who has lost a job or wants to get out of it," he said. "It's been a self-feeding thing."
The snow also has been good for repair shops.
"It's picked up a bit," said Tom Bieber, co-owner of Tom & Dylan's Auto Kruser's in Sioux Falls. "The parts business is up. But most of my customers are the die-hards who travel and love to ride in the west."
And speaking of West River, conditions have improved after a short warm-up.
"Trails were excellent after the holidays, when more than 4 feet of snow covered the 350-mile trail system," Raynor said. "We had a few weeks where many trails had minimal coverage due to warm weather, but colder temperatures and additional snowfall have improved trail conditions just in time for the Presidents Day weekend."
