I think the DOT tire thing is up to the descrepency of the local law.  Our cops here don't care as long as you have a liscence and aren't tearing around.
As for the tires, you may have to get some 14" rims to make it work

Got stopped by a deputy today.  No problems just wondering what I was up too driving around out by the lake.  They've had a few problems with people tearing around out there.  good thing I was alone and the atv clean.  Never said a word abouut my tires

I am a Deputy Sheriff and we do not enforce much of anything when it comes to atv's.  As long as they have a license plate we will not bother.  I have better things to do than harrass atv's.  And for the most part when you see a atv around my area,, I am probly riding with the group.  We live in a farming community and everybody and their dog rides a atv.

I am a Yankton cop and have the same opinion. I ride my Rhino in Yankton from time to time. The problem is with the ATV riders that have to hot rod on the pavement. If you are going to speed, ride wheelies, burn out or drive recklessly on your ATV in town you will get a ticket just the same as you would in a car or pickup.

Some Yankton cops used to stop ATV riders because of their tires but I believe that has stopped. Sounds like Sioux Falls is still stopping for tires.

Save the "hot rodding" for the dirt where it belongs. Just be safe on the streets and have respect for the privilege we have of being able to license our ATV's for street use.

I just licensed my atv yesterday.  Nothing on the afadavit said anything about tires.  I had to have a horn , rearview mirror, muffler , windshield or eye protection , 200cc and larger , license plate light and insurance.

talked to Minnehaha County State's Attorney the only thing he could tell me was about two statutes 32-19-1 and 32-19-2 dealing with tires on all vehicals

32-19-1.   Solid rubber tire vehicles--Tire requirements--Violation as petty offense.  Every solid rubber tire on a vehicle moved on any highway shall have rubber on its entire traction surface at least one inch thick above the edge of the flange of the entire periphery. A violation of this section is a petty offense.

32-19-2.   Cleated or spiked rolling surfaces prohibited--Farm machinery excepted--Tire chains excepted--Violation as petty offense.  No tire on a vehicle moved on a highway may have on its periphery any block, stud, flange, cleat, or spike, or any other protuberances of any material other than rubber which projects beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire except that it shall be permissible to use farm machinery with tires having protuberances which will not injure the highway and except also that it shall be permissible to use tire chains of reasonable proportions upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to slide or skid. A violation of this section is a petty offense.

Sorry I have to ask. :o  So do you have to have dot tires?  When I read that I don't see anything that say you have to.  Maybe I need better glasses.  Please give your 2 cents.  That would be alright with me if we didn't have to.  But in the same sense I like my hard rubber tires so I don't wear out my cheap mudders.

Nothing says you need dot tires i wanted to  find out cause "EVERYONE" think you need them because it something we all heard would. I would like to find like a harder tire but the dot cost to much. going to look for something like a golf/utility tires that might fit my 4 wheeler
