we have used the field culivater the last two years, it works, you just have toblock it so you dont go to deep, the pit should be just like it was the last 2 years, i dont want it to deep like redrazr said or you have to pull everyone out, the pits have been good in the past and hopefully they will be again.  and like mike said you need lots of water, last year we put in 9 fire trucks full the night before and 4 the day of the race.

The thing about a tiller is that as the blades are going around it packs the ground underneith it.  So you end up with fine soil on top that mixes well with the water and a hard bottom.

I liked the way Geddes was last year.  As long as there's enough water to keep the speeds down a little bit, that's the biggest part.

the bottom should be good and packed by now also had a sraper run over it, it was like concrete on sunday after you dug through the top soil.
