loading atv in truck
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:24:30 AM »
hello guy's i am new to the forum and have a few quistions i cant seem to figure out.

i have a full size truck, and a polaris 800 that i have been loading into my truck using a 1500 lb ramp. the ramp has bent for some reason and it was the most hevey duty ramp i could find in sioux falls. also it scares the crap out of me loading a 850lb atv on to my tailgate with to little cables and two little bolts holding the tailgate. i have a feeling that they will fail. i really need to leave my tailgate on becouse that is were my ice shack rides. if you guys can help me out let me know. thanks in advance.

you could put a piece of ply wood in there to help transfer some of the weight , or some 2x6's or something.

there is also a product out there I dont know what it is called. It connects into the receiver hitch and then extends out past the tail gate and turns up and connects to the rear of the quad

Before I had my trailer I also had trust issues with my tailgate and cables so I would just remove the tailgate while I loaded, it takes less than 30 seconds to remove a tail gate.  As far as the ramps you have to trust what they say they are rated for, to take some of the stress off of the ramps you can decrease the angle of the ramps when loading by backing into a ditch if available. When at home I would back my Truck up to the curb in front of the house so the angle wasn't as steep, then you don't have to hit the ramps as hard when loading.

Wouldnt cost to much to have a support made that would come out of your recieve hitch for the ramps to rest on. The tailgate its self should support the ATV no problem once its off the ramps. Its the extra pressure the ramps put on the tailgate I would be concerned with. BTW, Welcome to the forum GW. Looking forward to ICE!!!

These are the set of ramps I had when I had my pickup.  I went through three different styles but kept bending them.  I had these for over a year and didn't bend them once.  My Polaris sportsman 600 weighed 950 lbs.

Those are the ramps I use.  There's only about 8 bucks worth of material into making that thing, so I think 100 bucks is a little spendy for that
